Subject: [CR] Premature headset wear

Hi list, it has been suggested that  larger frames may contribute to rapid wear . A possible explanation is that they may allow more flex and therefore more chance of localised loading .  The pre war and early post war, intergral cup style of headset {also Bianchi up to the later 60's} may be better in these situations. The bearing races in this style of headset can move slightly in the head lugs and may provide a self aligning feature. Has anyone experienced the "brinelling" problem on large frames using this type of headset? I have a couple of these frames and I must say the headsets that came with them are in great shape. I don't know what sort of use they had prior to my ownership, they were built up to10 years before I was born. None of them look like they were babied however, and probably have had quite a bit of use. Ladies frames of the 30's and 40's often had very long head tubes, perhaps these "floating " races were a solution rather than just a quirk. Greg Lone Langley B.C. Canada
