A lot of the noise is the rollers striking the cogs. With half the rollers or with the rollers on uneven pitch (later blockchain has blocks consisting of two rollers close together the sound will change.

Also the less teeth on the sprocket, the less round the cog will be (8T cog ~octagonal) which will set up a vibration in the driveline assuming the bike rides at constant speed -- mvg
