Sure there are more inexpensive cleaners, and more effective too and you've probably heard of them, unless you're quite young. Gasoline, Varsol (mineral spirits or paint thinner). The trouble with the modern water-based degreasers ("green" or otherwise) is that you end up with water soaked parts and they're often less effective. I like to use discarded tooth brushes rather than brass brushes.
