Hey Gang,
In my recent research on Spence Wolfe (Cupertino Bike Shop) bikes, I found
several citations referring to often/occasional lack of downtube
graphics/decals on bikes purchased from/thru CBS. Besides my Cinelli, another example
is this EBAY Hetchins: http://ebay.com/
I can only speculate on the rationale for this practice; theft deterence (thieves couldn't make-out headbadge name in dim light) , humble owners (who buy Cinelli, Hetchins and Singers) ad space (gotta pay for that bike somehow), etc....anyone know a better reason? Did other shops of-the-day do this also? How was it done...was bike(s) ordered from maker w/o decals...was decal removed by bike shop, was customer given an option? Very puzzling practice...
