Some days you feel like riding fixed, some days not. Perhaps it's to offer an option for those who don't want to have two 3 speed rear wheels. The ultimate option would be a slide-on FW with a locking lever that you would have to dismount to operate. (So you couldn't accidentally shift into fixed while coasting.)

At first this seemed quite odd to me too. But I see SA are recommending, and showing in their illustrations, 13t cogs. I haven't found it on SA's site, but I've seen posters on other lists mention a 3:1 lower limit for chainring/cog ratios. 81 gear inches seems a bit much.

Could it be that they expect you to use 2nd for most of your riding, with top gear reserved for downhills? I haven't ridden fixed in years, but still have vivid memories of letting speed get out of hand on a steep hill.

Most of my bikes have SA hubs. While my brain knows that any gear other than direct is less efficient, my legs can't tell the difference.
