Hello Fuji Fans!

The Fuji Ace was measured center to top...I have a 24" version, which aside from the right rear dropout cracking at the chainstay junction during a century ride in 1996, has been very reliable. I'd post some pictures of it, but, being an amateur frame builder, I have extensively modified it since that time, brazing on all sorts of things and repainting it.

I swapped out a Regina Ora five cog freewheel for the CX that came with the Coppi bike I just cleaned up. That peculiar off clicking sound of the old CX was offensive and plain wrong. If Reginas had three pawls and one was hanging up because of a broken spring, then it made sense that the freewheel was still perfectly functional but just sounded awful. What's the deal with the Regina line up from those years? Wasn't the Oro the top of the line and others like the America and the CX lower in quality? What was the difference in construction between the various models? I remember that Suntour used to tout better performance from their different models but as one shop owner in SF (people's bike and tool) used to say - the Suntour Perfect is perfectly good as are all the Suntours on up. It seems to me that the Reginas were all perfectly finnicky all the way up to the top of the line model I have on my Raleigh (It's loud and sounds like rattling balls on some days).

BTW I'll be posting photos of the completed Coppi soon. I rode it tonight in record cold temperatures for Florida. It was sweet and smooth and braking squeel free even with the old Campy pads that came on it. It's so cool to invigorate a piece of history on a maiden ride. I always get the feeling the bike is thanking me for being freed from its former less attentive owner. This one was never really abused but more like discarded and unappreciated.

I never did much with Oro's untill lately trying to match up to older bikes . Most of my ride time from 80-90s was always on Regina CX or CX-S. One thi ng I always liked was the silent coast. Never had any issues with the inter nals, would wear out 14 and 15tooth sprockets a lot. It's pretty flat aro und here so those were the rear cogs used the most, and of course smaller diameter. I still use Phil Tenacious lube in the bodies, and knock on wo od have thousands of trouble free miles. Looking for the following for a 1969-1970 Raleigh Professional project:

Brooks Professional small rivet saddle (should be good, used condition)

Campagnolo 27.2 NR seat post (again, good used condition)

Olmo Professional black plastic 'bar tape (this is the heavier patterned tape), 2 rolls OR something similar

Many thanks

Anyone know of bicycle flashlight holders designed to attach a C-Cell flashlight to a rack rather than the handlebars? It looks like the classic Wald one could be adapted to rack mounting, but I think it is only for D-Cell flashlights. Most others seem to be for handlebar mounting. I have a couple of very bright CREE LED C-Cell flashlights, but I want to mount them to racks to reduce clutter on the bars. Any suggestions?

--shrug--I am skeptical ... have seen that head decal before on tons of dif
ferent bikes, if that bike is late 50's (possible, I suppose) it has?had
a lot of bits swapped off of it over the years. Still, were it my size I'd
have a go at it. Any of the Gitaneusa guys wanna pipe up?

Jan seems to think this bike was actually sold by the Singer shop. My initi al idea was that it was a later repaint in the shop of another maker's work as I have seen once (and only once) a frame of appalling quality, but with quite nice Rene Herse paint and hand logos. There is no way the frame coul d have been produced by anyone in the shop (it had nothing Hersish about it anyway), or sold in the first place as an RH, it was the work of an carele ss amateur. The only valid hypothesis for me is a repaint asked for by a go od customer for one of his everyday bikes. The Alex Singer was comparativel y a work of art.

So I assumed the AS was the same. Are other identical bikes known of that w ould prove bikes of this type were actaully sold by Singer?

Jan knows Czuka and has inside information, so I'm sure he knows best what was really going on in the shop at the time.

If the bike was indeed sold from the shop new, then I guess we have to cons ider it as an Alex Singer bike...

There are also bikes that are rumoured to have been made by CNC or outside frame builders (70s 80s I guess) and sold under the Singer name. These bike s are actually rather nice, although the lugwork is not typical Singer, and the parts not as good (not Maxi-Car hubs, no Singer stem...). I believe th ese bikes don't have a serial number.

Were these bikes sent to Singer as frames, and he built them up, and painte d them, or was the complete bike built outide shop (to specs provided by C suka). Ie what was the actual Singer input beyond the decals?

Just trying to work out in what proportion these bikes are Singer producti on/Singer labelled/ Singer designed or whatever.

Very useful. Note that if one is to believe the catalogs, the Ace was only available in 22 1/2" and 24" and the same was true of the Newest until 1976. That's certainly not my recollection, and seems a very strange strategy, especially for a Japanese manufacturer. Maybe they built these only for export to America and thought all Americans were tall. It doesn't say if it is ctc or ctt, but even 22 1/2 ctt seems too large to be the smallest size available. Anyone know if this is actually correct?

Jerry Moos
