John,
The vinyl decals work fine under Imron clear.

Could it be that the waterslide decals Nick has are very old stock? Last
year I purchased some Claud Butler decals from Lloyd's, which I haven't used yet. The head badge, seat tube and the Reynolds ones were waterslid e and the downtube one was thin vinyl because he was out of the waterslide
ones in the colour I needed. Seems he's replacing waterslide with vinyl as they're used up. Is the thin vinyl just as good as waterslide under clea rcoat?
