Regarding 1974 prices for a top line italian bike - I still have the Spence Wolf catalog from that year which quotes $353 for a Cinelli Supercorsa with all campagnolo except cranks (TA) and brakes (Mafac). That price included Clement Setas.

Campy crank upgrade was 35 bucks and the brakes were 90, so figure 500 bucks out the door by the time you bought a spare tire and paid sales tax (4 %). The Alex Singer I bought in 1974 went out the door for $725; a very expensive machine back then. I think that included a wool jersey.

Nagos on the rack at Sugden and Lynch (Menlo Park) were in the $500-600 range. Not sure if Super was offered on a bike at the time, but could be added on.
