Somewhere in the deep recesses of my subconcious a synapse is making a faint connection. I think it may be an early version of when they were developing the lever size, and the longer ones gave too much leverage and broke the skewers, wore the cam action prematurely, made hub adjustment trickier, etc. I can't be sure if I'm recalling correctly, but that seems to ring a bell.
