This wonderful image and some additional information were forwarded to me by a European gentleman who is great scholar of our hobby and the history of cycling sport. Here we see Ocana, the winner of the 1973 TdF, at the peak of his career-and in very fine company. It will be noted that he riding an orange Motobecane-the cycle he used in this race, save for stage 18, when having opened a commanding lead, he opted for the Speedwell shown in a previous image. Fate, which had never been especially kind to Ocana (or perhaps he created his own destiny?) would subsequently be cruel. Beset by both financial and health problems he died by his own hand in 1994.
