Subject: [CR] 50s 60s upgrades...

So - it's 1957, you are 18-19 yrs old, you've been working double hard to save up for that italian bike you always wanted, but you'll never afford the frame you want with all top of the line components, so you get what you can afford, almost the best, but not quite...

Then - over the next few years, you start to upgrade as you see new things, as the technology changed, etc...

What did you start with, and how did the upgrades procede? Ie, you got the bike with 'x' brakes, and then 'y' brakes came out two years later and you HAD to have them...so instead of buying new tires that summer, you went for the brakes instead...etc..When did you ditch the cottered cranks and switch them and why? What were the things, or what was the hype, driving your decision...?

Also - your bike came with a steel stem and bars - did you upgrade to alluminum bars and keep the steel stem? or did you upgrade to an alu stem and bars at the same time? Did you care?

Thanks - looking forward to hearing your opinions...
