Subject: [CR] Pat Murphy on Schwinn Paramount

I was suprised to see a few listmembers identify the rider in the Schwinn Paramount ad as Pat Murphy. Pat Murphy has been involved with cycling for most of his life. Now 75, Pat still lives in the Chicago area having spent many years working for Schwinn. Pat has a fantastic memory for cyclists, races, and equipment and is a great source of information, as well as a great guy. Pat continues to ride and when I last spoke to him a while back on the occasion of his 75th birthday, he told me that some friends were coming over later and that they were all going to ride the rollers. Pat grew up in Ontario, Canada and was attracted to competitive cycling after hanging around the small wooden track at Delhi, Ontario. During the 1950's, Pat was associated with CCM and rode a total of 4 custom CCM Flyer track and road bikes (Nervex Pro lugs, Reynolds 531 tubing). Pat's racing exploits during these years are summarized in the CCM trade magazine "VIM", and included around 30 major events per year. Pat was an outstanding rider on both road and track, often winning events or placing in the top few riders. Like Ted Ernst, Pat is a great source of information. To the best of my knowledge, he is not a CR listmember.
