As a long time recycler of metal,the best way,that I've found to tell if a metal is ferrous or non-ferrous is to use a MAGNET. On a side note,I often see people advertise their bicycles as being made of aluminum because of the "REYNOLDS" decal. Here in the United States, a popular brand of "aluminum foil" is called "Reynolds Wrap".........So people leap to the conclusion that the bicycle is made of aluminum because of the Reynolds decal,so I always ask them to put a magnet on the frame to see if it truly made of Aluminum.The magnet will only stick to metals with iron in them.The magnet will lightly stick to lower quality "stainless steel".Generally a magnet will not stick to Stainless steel,from my experience Stainless steel also just has a certain, "feel and shine to it",silky smooth like Campagnolo hubs that are properly adjusted.
