I've owned or borrowed a number of track bikes, ridden them on the road and on the track. I would say the majority of them have toeclip overlap - rega rdless of age. My circa-1938/9 Durkopp has significant overlap, at least an inch. Of course, I'm also sporting size 11 (46 in Euro) feet.

I also have a couple of road bikes with overlap, in case anyone want to exp and this discussion. I know that this is considered a "no-no" among thought ful frame builders these days, and these bikes were not built (too) recentl y - '70s and early '80s.

you get used to it. lots of track bikes have overlap. my motta road bike had overlap and it was a 56.5 or 57cm top tube. my track bike is 57.5cm square and it has pretty bad overlap. the gefsco australian road frame has the worst ovelap, 56cm top tube, the r ake is real short...something like 25-28mm or so.

if you're turning sharp, point your toe down as the pedal comes around if t he wheel is in the right plane to interfere. or straighten your wheel out as the pedal comes around. the road bike is easier as you can just not pedal if you're turning sharp e nough to have interference.

I swear recently (last 60 days?) someone posted a solution for Mafac Racer/2000 pad replacements, which suggested using the salmon 'kool stop' type of pads, and I kind of THINK that the poster suggested that Harris Cyclery had them in stock. The suggestion may have included some 'trimming' needed to make them work.

If anyone recalls this and can point me to the post, I'd love it !! I tried making the 'search the archives' work... no luck - hope I wasnt dreaming this !!

I started track racing in 1948. We simply called the condition "toe lap." That term still works for me. It was only a problem when riding track bikes with fixed gears on the road. Primarily experienced during low-speed turns or when attempting a "track stand" at a traffic light (with one pedal forward.) Road bikes in those days had longer wheelbases and relaxed geometry, as did path racers. No toe lap. Today, big-foot fixie riders with modern road bikes, especially criterium race bikes can have toe lap. Again toe lap is only a problem with fixed gears, because with a freewheel most people coast around slow-speed turns anyway. And the first time you do that and the tire hits your toe, you learn to coast through turns with the inside pedal down.

List, Offered for sale are two 56 cm frame sets on Sacramento Craig's list. I pos ted these on Saturday. Both have original finishes and decals and come with the headsets. The Coppi frame is from around 1970, has Columbus tubing, nicely thinne d long-point lugs, and Campag dropouts. The Competition is from 1972, h as Capella lugs, a nice slopping crown and Huret drop outs. I have the co rrect jubilee derailleurs for it if you would like. To small for me and saving for an alignment table... $95.00 each for list members plus actual cost of shipping. No charge for pa cking.

Since Steven cited the post saying how much I love the Mavic SSC rims, and I still stand by that post, I have an offer for any CR listers tempted to buy those rims.

My usual build price for CR listers is $199 for spokes, labor and shipping. For any of the SSC rims, I will drop the price by $20, to $179 if I need to ship the wheels, and will go to an astounding $159 if they are to be delivered to Cirque du Cyclisme. The price includes buyer's choice of Wheelsmith or DT Competition double-butted stainless spokes and my usual meticulous (didn't Bob Shackleford call it "anal"?) build quality.

My only regret with these rims is that I can't afford them myself right now. Otherwise, I'd be riding them on my off-topic welded wonder bike.

Dear Listmembers, I spend so much time looking for the perfect parts for my restorations, I sometimes forget the whole point of this which is actually riding these wonderful old bikes. I live in the heart of Los Angeles wher e riding can take on "Death Race" attributes so I don't often get the oppor tunity to just enjoy the ride. I finally got my 60's Rene Herse dialed in the way I like it and drove out to a long bike path in the San Fernando Val ley where I actually got to ride in relative safety for hours. As some of you have experienced when using the on-line registration for the Cirque, some people appear in the "Confirmed Riders" list and some (most) don't. The reason is that BikeReg is really set up for race registration, not events like the Cirque In order to make it simple, we chose to use the merchandise component of their system for the various types/costs of registering. That problem also existed last year, and even though we've streamlined the registration some, there are still too many choices.

However, there is a way to be added to the "confirmed" (which is why some people are already).

PLEASE NOTE, WHEN REGISTERING ON LINE, BE SURE TO CHECK THE BOX UNDER THE "CATEGORY" "FULL EVENT" HEADING THAT SHOWS A START TIME OF 11:00 AM AND AND ENTRY OF OF $0. (It's before you scroll down to the charge boxes.) CHECKING THAT BOX WILL PUT YOU IN THE "CONFIRMED RIDERS" LIST. I'VE CHANGED THE WORDING TO MAKE THAT MORE CLEAR. HOPEFULLY IT WILL HELP.

Unfortunately, I have not come up with a way to add those who have already registered, but I'm working on it. In my spare time. HA!!
