Subject: [CR] 1970s Campy Downtube Shifters or Why Cable guides?

Hello List, I was wondering if anyone could explain why the "cable guides" were included on 1970s (or pre-1978?) Campagnolo downtube shifters? Were they intended to be actual "cable guides" and simply guide the shifter cable down towards the bottom bracket or were they intended to be housing stops where you would use a ferrule? Neither seem like good enough explanations as to why they were there. There dont bother me, and I actually like the way they look, but I was just wondering. Thanks!
