I agree it would be nice to compliment the other fellow's vintage bike as well when receiving a compliment but possibly he just had a lot on his mind, was suffering oxygen deprivation from a climb, or just absent minded. I get that way myself.

Maybe he was on a ride to get away from some tough personal circumstance and not at his 'polite' best.

There seem to be a lot of folks in light of current events in 'tough personal circumstances'. I find a good bike ride sure can vent some of the worry or frustration.
