48 hole spoke wheels were common for years on tandem wheels (through the on topic time period and probably up to 1990 or so). Not used very much now. Rims of modern design are available from tandem shops and peter white cycles. As for their rarity, tandems account for about 1% of the bicycle market so I don't expect many are around (although even more than singles tandems tend to sit unused in garages).

I have one old 48 hole Campy Record rear hub, it's in good shape, but I seldom see any 48 hole rims listed on Ebay. I was just wondering how common are these? Is there a benefit to 48? Thanks. Fred Durrette Summerville, SC
