I was holding back, but since the discussion continues, let me say that I DO have a Cinelli set up as a fixed gear. I love riding it. It makes a nice alternative to my geared bikes. Never mind the whole "it's a zen-like feeling of connection with the bike, the road, the world" thing. It's just fun to ride.
Part of riding old bikes is making a statement about not being like everyone else. This is true whether you intend to make that statement or not. The fact of riding a bike that is at least 25 years old, with what many would consider obsolete equipment says something about us and our choices. I think part of the attraction of fixed gear bikes is like that: I am riding something that is not for everyone. It takes some extra skill to use this machine.
As for the Cinelli, it belongs to me. I had it painted. I put the parts on it. I built the wheels. It's my bike and I can do whatever I want with it. You may think it's a shame that I don't have it set up with gears, but that's your affair. I haven't modified the frame in any way. I could set it up as a geared bike tonight, but I like it as it is. I happen to think that the simplicity of the build really shows off the elegance of the frame.
