Tufo distributors have told me that Tufo tape works best on 100% cotton base tapes. IIRC, Panaracer tubulars had a lot of nylon or other stnthetic content in the casing, and maybe the base tape as well. So maybe the Tufo tape isn't adhering perfectly to the base tape. I was a little skeptical that the base tape material actually made that much difference, but maybe there is something to that.

\r?\n> Ben,
\r?\n>
\r?\n> They were mounted with Tufo Extreme rim tape on new clean
\r?\n> rims. At first I
\r?\n> thought that there may have been a chemical reaction
\r?\n> between the adhesive in
\r?\n> the Tufo tape and the Panaracer tires. I asked the person
\r?\n> at Tufo customer
\r?\n> service and they said that they never had a problem with
\r?\n> rim tape affecting
\r?\n> the base tape.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> On both tires it's a clear case of adhesive failure
\r?\n> between the base tape
\r?\n> and the tire. I have some Italian made tires from the 70s
\r?\n> and 80s and you
\r?\n> still need to use an Exacto knife (scalpel) to separate the
\r?\n> base tape from the
\r?\n> tire casing.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> I have 20 some old sewups that came on bikes or wheels that
\r?\n> I've acquired
\r?\n> over the past few years. These tires are 5-15 years old and
\r?\n> every one of them
\r?\n> has base tape separation. They range from cheapos to fairly
\r?\n> decent sewups.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> I picked 6 of the best ones and sent them to Tire Alert in
\r?\n> Florida to have
\r?\n> the base tape replaced.

\r?\n>
\r?\n> They charged me $8.00 USD each for the new tape including
\r?\n> return shipping.
\r?\n> I got them back yesterday and they look very good.
