I seem to recall some version of sticky tape for mounting tubulars back when I first began riding them, in the early '70's. But I've always used the tube variety of one brand or another: Clement, Vittoria, Continental, Wolber and that stuff what came in the green tubes (...??). I've toured on tubulars on a number of occasions, including once to Mexico and another time across the Mojave (both times in July, go figure) and have never had a prob w rolling a tire. And I wouldn't characterize my mounting proceedure as being esp. fastidious. I apply a coat to the rim and a coat to the base tape, let dry to touch, and then mount. Not a big production at all. I don't kno, mebbe I've just been way lucky the past 30+ yrs....!
