Subject: [CR] Frejus cottered crank/chainstay clearance

Hi again,

My late 50s Frejus has a Magistroni cottered crank: http://picasaweb.google.com/MarkABattley/1957FrejusSuperCorsa#517440143631200995 4

The bottom bracket is branded Frejus, but looks similar to this Magistroni: http://www.blackbirdsf.org/magistroni/images/bb_nikcrom.jpg

No surprise there since apparently Magistroni produced components for Frejus.

The puzzle is that clearance between the crank and the chainstay is very tight. The crank has to be set slightly out from the end of the BB spindle (as in the first link above) or the chainring bolts clip the chainstay.

Frame BB shell is 70mm, BB spindle is 127mm. According to http://www.blackbirdsf.org/magistroni/bb.html there was also a 130mm spindle available.

The crank and BB were on the bike when I got it, all I've done is take it apart and put it back together again. And yes, the BB spindle is the correct way around...

Has anyone else had similar clearance problems on a Frejus?

Any suggestions?

I also had a problem with the crank shifting sideways on the spindle while riding, but suspect that was a combination of reusing damaged cotter pins and riding it far enough before retightening the cotter (blame the idiot who put it together...).

Thanks,
