In 1989 I went to the Masi shop at the Vigorelli with a friend who was picking up a brand new 3V.  In showing us the bike, Alberto explained that the size was measured to the tip of the seat lug (putting his index finger on the tippy top of the seat lug), and he said he did it this way because it was "consistent."   I remember thinking that it was inconsistent with all the other builders I knew of, but I kept it to myself.  I suppose Faliero decided to measure frames this way (God knows why) and Alberto kept up the practice in order to be consistent with dad.

Kevin,

Another piece of news. I had no idea there might be others who used the tip of the seat lug as the measuring standard. Any idea why those who choose this method prefer it? It seems center to top of top tube makes sense, as does center to center. But why to the tip of the seat lug? Maybe someone has an explanation; not that it really matters in the end. I always measure c-t and state that. Then others can make the adjustment to suit their preference.

For sure this is how we measured Bob Jacksons and Woodrups.......though, interestingly at Thorn cycles we do take the measurment from center to center, having said that when I do a frame for myself it will always be based on center to top of seat lug!........and I still think in inches despite working to metric.

Cheers.
