Thanks to all, both on and off list for info on this subject.
I think I will go with fitting a pair of alloy bars with my Cinelli steel stem [incidently the bit of a bike I've had the longest...1968, when I was 13!] seem to recall it was mated with a pair of GB Maes bars.
