I agree with everything that's been said, but I would add for the benefit of those new to vintage bikes that the make of the saddle matters also. Older or pre-used saddles from some makers don't hold up as well as a Brooks or Ideale. One that comes to mind is the Wrights. Although these are usually cheaper, I would opt for the Brooks if given the choice. I also think that riders who buy Brooks or Ideales are more likely to take better care of them. Since I have a stable of vintage bikes, I'm always looking for period correct saddles within my budget, which are always used. The used Brooks usually just take a little TLC to be comfortable, but the Wrights I've bought have been disasters. I use Belts on my three Japanese bikes and they're also decent saddles. I was recently in the market for a used Brooks Swallow, but the used ones on Ebay seem to go for as much as a new one, so I opted to purchase new in this case and will enjoy breaking it in over the summer.
