I like the Veloflex as well. They are as you pointed out a little pricey. For the price of Guedo and Sonia at Veloflex (as advertised the tire is made in the plant Vittoria vacated years ago) I will go with the Asian worker from Thailand. He works cheaper so Torelli's overhead is lower and the Gavia has a thread count of 320tpi and runs about the same. Or go with Torelli's Arezzo with a 260tpi at about $45-50. I like my tires high performance and comfortable (must be above 200tpi) . There are several good choices out the but nothing under (in my opinion) under $35. I'm a fan of Veloflex Pave's.  A bit pricey but very very pretty, classy and tough! http://www.wekeepyoucycling.com/en/p-217-veloflex-pave-tire.aspx

Somebody needs to tell yall about Torelli Torino Brown (gumwall). So here goes.  A 700x23 tire with 240tpi and goes for about $35 and is a smoking good tire. Handmade (like Vittoria) also made in Thailand (like Vittoria) and is classified as a Open Tubular (like Vittoria).
