Morgan, my experience with disk storage over the last 30 years says that if you have a head crash and the data has not been backed up or mirrored, you are up the creek without a paddle. My understanding is that the drive will not be able to be spun back up to pull the data off once it has "crashed." The head ruins the surface of the platter when it crashes. But who knows. maybe something new is available now but it does not make sense to me, You may be pouring money down a rat hole trying to fix the problem. Most of us probably have our pictures on our own computers and could resend them once you are up and running. You may want to consider using Mozy or something like it in the future which is an inexpensive service to backup the data off site.
