I was thinking about sending a comment to the list about cracks in some of these older parts. I was about to put a pair of 70's vintage Campagnolo Record pedals on my vintage tandem when i noticed that there was a crack in the cage that rendered the pedal unsafe. This would surprise me more if I wasn't in the habit of falling so often.
Be careful with older parts, particularly if they can hurt you. Cranks should be inspected for cracks periodically no matter what the vintage. All the failed cranks I've seen show evidence of a long-term issue. This means that there were many hours of riding after the crack was clearly visible. Eric Keller Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, USA
