Yup, that seems right on.
We sold those bikes at/in those years and they were 8-sp.
By '62/3 I think they were gone and were using D/T shifters.
First the Cotinentals came with 10 sp and a year later the Varsity followed
if I remember correctly.
Too bad the gent doesn't answer your post which would be informative and
helpful to him for any problem he may encounter with a purchaser if
misrepresented.
I think that time frame is when Schwinn put on a big ad campaign and then
the American public started calling all derailleur bikes 10-speeds which
held for 30 years or more and even today yet some older folks out of the
bike game still come in a say 10-speed when referring to derailleur equipped
bikes.

HI , I have some early Continentals in the collection, '47 up to late 50's were fillet brazed chro-mo. Very different. The bike in the pic looks mostly original and the ser. # is Jan 15, 1960. The owner has not replied to my email. This bike is electro forged boiler pipe ala all the other modern Varsity/Continenral's. It is unique ('59-61) as it has the suiside huret front der.
