hurt the chrome but you could scratch the chrome during the stripping
operation. The thing is; you can't polish the chrome under the paint to a
shine. It will have to stay as it is. It shouldn't be polished under the
paint; but it could be, I suppose. You may not get what you're expecting
once the paint is off.

I have a bike that came with chrome dropout surfaces. I noticed from paint chips that the whole fork was probably chromed, so I stripped it and I was right. It was all polished and chromed under the paint. Next, I attacked the rear dropouts and stays for about 6" - 8" and found good chrome under the paint also. However, when I tried stripping more of the drive side chainstay, I found only nickel farther along and quit before that ran out. It still looks good when waxed.
