Ahoy ! I found this bit of information on the Ultra Cycling Hall of Fame website concerning Lon Haldeman. Itreminded me of the “best”, “fastest” tyre, tubing, gearing discussions thatoccassionally arise on the CR List. (and which I always read with interestdespite carrying a spare tyre myself.) Yeah, I can only hope. http://www.ultracycling.com/about/hof_haldeman.html In 1979 Lon set the Wisconsin End to End Record going south against thewind. The distance was 407 miles in 23 hours 7 minutes. He used a one speedbike with a 42 x 14 gear (82 inches). Lon rode the first 250 miles without asupport crew and then was joined by his parents who followed him at night theremaining miles. 1981 Lon rode a 24 hour track record at theNorthbrook Track near Chicago. He used the same one speed bike for commuting to work and back 90 miles the daybefore. During the track record the luggage racks and water bottles wereremoved. The bike had 27 inch clincher tires. During the track record thedistances and times were: 100 miles 4h 11m200 miles 8h 4m300 miles 13h 23m400 miles 18h 50m454 total miles Enjoy !Richard CielecChicago, Illinois; U.S.A.
