Hi Michael, wherever you are. Typically 5 and 6 speed freewheels used the same spacing so a 5 speed chain worked w/ a 6 speed freewheel. However, some 6speeds [e.g. SunTour Ultra and Atom Compact] used the tighter 7speed spacing. A 5 speed chain will NOT work w/ these or virtually any 7 speed. I say "virtually" because some early Shimano 7 speed cassettes apparently used 6 speed spacing. It's not likely you'll be running across any of those. Pretty much all derailleur chains from 4-11 speeds are nominally 3/32" but as you crowd the freewheel [or cassette] w/ more cogs the sideplates have gotten thinner. Rule of thumb is you can use a chain made for "X" speeds on freewheels [or cassettes] smaller than "X" but not vice versa. You're probably OK w/ a 6 speed but not a 7. Good luck. I am looking for a gold-colored chain for a restoration and found a few Regina extra oro chains on Ebay. The question is: Will this chain work with 6 and 7 speed freewheels?
According to Velobase, the chain is 3/32", so I think it will work, but I wanted to get another opinion before I spring for it. Thanks! Michael
