I remember using JANTEX (French) rim tape for years during the 1960s and into the 1970s. Faster to apply than rim cement and less messy. I never had a problem from a tire accidentally rolling off a rim, although some racers were vary of ever using the stuff. Perhaps it was just Olde School reluctance to move on to a newer type of product for the purpose.
That tape was once available at most any US bike shops. I think VELOX may have once made a similar product, too.
I suppose the recently manufactured TUFO tubular rim tapes are the modern successors to that product.
