One of the reasons that Frejus enthusiasts love their track bikes is that
they are actually pursuit bikes, more comfortable than the tighter geometry
of a sprint bike. I did see a Frejus sprint bike hanging on the walls of
the Lazzaretti bike shop in Rome in the 1970s. It had tighter geometry and no
drilling for a brake in the fork. It was in the traditional team colors of
champagne-grey and dark red. The Lazzaretti family told me it was not for
sale. Please note that the credit for this information about Frejus track
bikes came from Tom Avenia himself.. He told me that it was his idea to have
a hole drilled in the front fork and the factory acquiesced to his
request. He also stated that he thought that sprint bikes would be too harsh to
ride so he worked with the factory to have pursuit track bikes imported to
the USA. I made many visits to both his shops and spent a lot of time with
him. It was Tom who gave me the address of the Frejus/ Legnano store in
Milan and encouraged me to visit this shop. I hope he is in cycling heaven, a
true guru of the New York City bike scene back in the day. Norm Hellman,
