Hey Matthew,
I'm pretty much a "noob" too, but I have set up a few bikes for touring.? You definitely need a Rally or other long cage rear derailleur.? You need the long cage to take up the chain when on the small chainring and still have enough chain for the larger combinations.? I put a 99 triple on a 77 Grand Jubile? http://velospace.org/

Bear with me, gang. Having never set up a bike for a tour, I'm afraid I have some silly, basic questions. For starters: I recently came into a Stronglight Mod. 99 triple crankset with "drillium" chainrings... I also have in my possession a Campy Record triple BB set-up. Can anybody offer any info as to whether or not these two might be compatible? Will a Campy front derailleur potentially work with this set up as well? And now I'll show my real 'noob' colors...: Is it common practice to use a triple AND a 'Rally' rear derailleur? Or is the Rally more commonly used in tandem with a double and a gear cluster that is broad enough to accomplish a decent gear range? Muchas Gracias, Matthew Bowne Brooklyn, New York
