I have another triple crankset with the smaller dome on the inside face of the right crankarm. This can be fitted 4 mm closer to the bottom bracket shell using the same spindle (74-SS X3). I can now shift the crank all the way to the outer chainwheel. I guess I still am not sure why this works, since I believe I'm using a pre-78 crank with a post 78 spindle, but I'm not complaining. BTW the chainline is fine. Many thanks to all who responded. Happy New Year, Josh Berger Bronx, NY USA

I'm putting together my early 60's Masi Special with a Nuovo Record triple crank (36-42-47), Nuovo Record bottom bracket marked "70-SS X3", and a Record front derailleur- the earlier kind that has a stop requiring a length of stainless housing. My problem is that the front derailleur doesn't carry the chain out far enough to reach the large chainring. I've tightened the crank bolt as far as it can go, The bottom bracket shell is 70mm, I have a similar setup on a Cinelli, though it uses a later model NR front. Any suggestions besides riding more so I don't require triple cranks?
Thanks and Happy New Year,
