Keith,

Yeah, oxyacetylene balloons are fun also, but brazing gas is rather expensive and requires a trip to the brazing supply to get more. A similar effect can be had by making hydrogen balloons. Put some water and lye in a glass soda bottle and then throw in some aluminum foil. Cap it with a balloon. Next thing you know you have a miniature Hindenburg! As kids we didn't light them up very often. Our big fun was making several balloons, enough to carry a note off into the wild blue yonder. The note requested a phone call back from the finder of said communication as to where it was found. We had some interesting calls. Didn't work as good as e-mail, but it was fun. Al Gore hadn't invented the Internet yet. ;-)

The other one was to attach an .049 R/C model airplane engine to a standard kite. We only did that one once. Costs an engine every time. The kite was seen flying over the beach in Huntington Beach that day. Never seen again after that. I'm sure the familiar whine of the motor coming from a kite was a new experience for everyone!

OK, enough fun and games. Back to the regular scheduled program.

Oxyacetylene balloons have always been a favorite of mine. Sounds like a Howitzer. Cheers, Keith

Chuck,

I just saw a promo for Modern Marvels. "The Potato" is slated for tomorrow night at 8pm.

The smell of the burnt hairspray isn't very pleasing; but the fun is really worth it. I'm curious who came up with the idea. There are lots of "folk entertainment" type of stunts like the potato gun out there, for example the Mentos and Diet Coke thing. I find this stuff really interesting and fun.

The potato gun is totally legal; but the projectile will blow a hole clean through a bag of potato chips at 50 yards. I wonder why it is framebuilders and painters that bring out this stuff when they get together. The potato gun and the 2 liter soda bottle water rockets were transferred to the southern Cal framebuilders by way of Rob Roberson who picked up a lot of these concepts from the guys working at Ibis when he worked there back in the 90's or thereabouts.

I can hardly wait to see this on TV!

With hair spray or deodorant as propellants, it sounds like an activity that a generation brought up on television would embrace. I'd guess that

the deodorant would, at the least, not offend. The hair spray would undoubtedly be of a cheap variety and likely the fragrance would remind one of high school prom dates. What a world we live in!

We have word that the History Channel is airing a segment on the program "Modern Marvels" related to "the potato". Apparently about a year ago world renown bike painter and one of my best friends and colleges, Joe Bell, was filmed demonstrating a common framebuilder/painter recreational activity for the History Channel. Jason Lilly, who is also a bike industry person is featured as well. When we gather for parties and fun, one of the favorite activities is shooting the Potato Gun. They are made from plumbing tubing and an igniter from a Coleman lantern. The propellant is usually hair spray or deodorant. The rest of the details are best seen as opposed to explained. I encourage everyone to try and catch Modern Marvels tomorrow at 8pm (as far as we have been told) to see this thing in action. After the show I will explain a little bit of the history of these activities amongst framebuilders (the ones who are fun and creative people, not the ones who take themselves way too seriously) and fill in a few other things we like to do for grins after we've done a hard days work.

Once I'm all finished moving and getting all set up in my new shop, and after I have caught up a bit; I have plans to build " Uber Potato"; which will be the next stage of refinement of the process. The current generation is called the "Dick Tater". I suspect this will be WELL worth watching, knowing what a fun personality JB has and knowing his ability as a showman. Catch it if you can! NO, not the potato, the TV show!
