Subject: [CR] Cast, forged and pressed dropouts

Hi list, I see there is some uncertainly on dropoutĀ  manufacture. I doubt any of the on topic dropouts are cast, with the possible exception of the oddball honeycomb Gitane style. All the others will either be die punched out of sheet steel on a punch press; the "cheaper" flat style, or will be the forged type. The forged ones are the thicker Campy , Simplex, Agrati style, often but not always with a derailleur tab. Steel is a dificult material to cast, and in the 50's and 60's the modern investment casting process wasn't widely used. Most castings were Iron and not easily brazed, therefore seldom used for bike frames. Greg Lone Langley B.C. Canada
