Dear Simon,

To measure an ERD, take two used spokes and make a j bend in the elbow end of the spokes, then put them into spoke holes that are directly opposite from each other and thread a nipple on each. Use a rubber band to hold the spokes straight toward each other, but with little or no tension. Measure the distance from spoke nipple to spoke nipple. Then measure the length of the nipple from the rim seat to the end (just the length of the narrow portion). Take the length you measured and add 2 x the spoke nipple length. That will give you a pretty good approximation of the ERD.

If you have rims with a published ERD, lay the unknown rims next to them and you can get a good approximation from there.

Then estimate whether you think the error in your ERD is off on the large side or the small side (just a gut feeling based on other wheels you have built). Then run the numbers through a spoke calculator (I use the DT-Swiss Website). Since pre-cut spokes are usually in even-numbered lengths, round the calculated length up or down to the nearest even-numbered mm depending on your gut error guess.

That number is close enough. With tubular wheels, you can get away with spokes that are 2-3 mm shorter than ideal and 1-2 mm longer than ideal.

Hope this helps.
