This may be damning Shimano with faint praise, but there really was a reason for the 1" pedal hole on these and the related D/A AX. The bearings move inside the crank arm's plane, which allows the cage to be lowered while keeping decent cornering angle. The result is to lower the rider's center of gravity just a bit, maybe a cm. And, it kept the "Q factor", the distance the feet are spaced apart, as small as possible. Folks thought that mattered back then, and it probably does for some people. All in all, not a bad idea.

Why the praise so faint? Just a few years earlier, Harlan Meyer of HiE had introduced the drop-platform pedal himself, but with the bearing outside, up against the crank. A really elegant design, but the Shimano derivative was even better.

Why are these so rare now? In my opinion, it was unlike the BioPace fad that faded away because it didn't do anything significant. AX got washed away when "everyone" serious moved to clipless pedals just after the AX gruppo hit the market, not just because the aero fad had run its course. harvey sachs mcLean va. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have this SR Aero Bike that has the 600 AX series components (item # 140378079280 on eBay) on it which is pretty cool excpet for when you want to trade out the pedals because the bore on the pedals is the honkin big 1" thing that no one ever has done before or since...seems as though Shimano did their favorite little dance with this one. Yet we keep buying from them don't we? Well, anyway, now I was wondering if anyone knew of an adapter for this crankarm in which I could use to convert this morphadite into the standard "lets all live together happy and proud" 9/16 x 20 threads?
I am not sure how somthing like this owuld even work or if there ever was one invented. I am sure that it would be a Shimano exclusive if there is. Thanks all and Happy Easter people
