I think it's sorta prudent to use newer freewheels on bikes you ride a lot. (aside from the garish ones with built-in Shimano billboards, although they're only apparent "at rest")  After all, your, you're only wearing them out.  Same with chains...and replace em more often to help preserve the FW.  The current cheapest 8 speeds from Sram are retro'ish and are only $15 retail.

For bikes you ride less often, vintage stuff is cool.  I have to say, I love my old Suntours.  Do I hoard them?  I guess I do, to an extent.  I was lucky enough to be into bikes when they were new, so I have that advantage, I guess.

I've started to part with some at swaps.  Used freewheels are often a crap shoot, so I try and price them fairly for both parties. My 2 cents.
