When I worked in a bike shop in the '70's early 80's we always took off the Campagnolo dustcaps. Unnecessary weight we thought, and the cranks looked cooler without them.
Now I wonder: doesn't it make sense to keep the threads clean so that the remover goes on well? Do you have dustcaps on your cranks?
