Michael Shiffer wrote: I'm planning on showing & riding a restored late 1960s (no holes in lugs, no oil ports) Cinelli SC at Cirque this June. It wears a NR Gruppo that is a couple of years newer than the frame. Although not exactly what the bike would have sported out of the factory, the only glaring anachronism is Campy brakes. The rear derailleur is dated as well. I have a Record derailleur in fine condition and a set of Universal Super 68 sidepulls that would not be out of place. Campagnolo brakes are just so much classier, very much in the era, and only a little newer than the frame. So, what would you do? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Michael, I look forward to meeting you, and will have my patina-rich Cinelli SC there, too. For a decade now, I've had a pretty simple approach to Cirque: I brung what I run, to invert the NASCAR phrase. I do put period pedals on instead of the SPDs I ride with, and change out the saddle if it's wearing an off-topic one that year, and I even (sometimes) remove a little of the road dirt.

If you ride with Campy brakes, leave 'em on. Just tell folks that the Universal 68s modulate poorly, because they require so much force, so (some previous owner) upgraded to the Campag speed retarders for safety. My Cinelli is a bit later, and has Universal 68s. Trust me on this: I'd rather have the Campy.

but, I have a pretty consistent record on not having the prettiest bikes in the show. They're riders, all of them.

Fortunately, our hobby has stayed at a fairly low key, not nearly as anal as the classic car people with their overdone stuff. When someone gets an award for his "restoration" with Imron sprayed inside the BB and head tube, I'll know it's time to get out. But, your mileage may vary.
