Matt,

Personally, I would classify the frame as a '71. To me the '72 is the only year that the MC crown is present with the two holes and the clover on top. I think the MC type crown may have first appeared in about 1970; but according to Colnago, they first began using investment cast crowns in 1969. But then again, Ernesto himself told me that my '69 Colnago was built in 1965; which I'm quite certain is not true. There still seems to be two different opinions on when these traits appear and when they change for the next phase.

I would say the playing card style decals are the correct ones for this frame. If it were mine (I actually already have one exactly like the one being discussed), I would go with those decals (as I did for my bike).

Brian Baylis La Mesa, CA Exact dates for some frames is a matter of opinion at times.

Hi Bob, I have been trying to make sense of the '70-'72 "transition years" for quite some time, as I have been neck deep in my own restoration project for what seems like an eternity. Not to fuss here, but I think the bike dates from '71-early '72. '72 seems to be when the "playing card" graphics were phased out and the clover on the fork crown seems to first show up. Like Dale's freshly painted machine, this sports the Cinelli MC style fork crown with the two holes on the sides of the crown shoulders. I'm not totally sure when the "MC" style crown first showed up. Perhaps it was even used concurrently with the earlier "scalloped" shaped fork crown, also with the two holes on the sides, and found on late 60's bikes but also early "Playing Card" machines...Bob's gorgeous red bike on the CR site and Matt Gorsky's black bike come to mind. My guess is that if this was a '70, it'd have that even earlier style crown.

It has been resprayed with later 70s decals and had top tube cable guides and shifter braze-ons added, but it has the telltale clovers in all 3 lugs with a larger one on the lower lug, and the two-hole crown with no clover. Long dropouts with no eyelets of course. Going way too cheap now. Buy this and let me restore it for you with the proper playing card decals.
