Subject: [CR] Cinelli steel stem width question

The frigid cold and continuous snow has left Chicago and has been replaced with a steady rain. As conditions are sub-par for riding, it is a perfect time to tune-up my bikes and swap-out a few parts.

On one bike, I have an 80 mm steel, no-badge Cinelli stem. It has always been a bit uncomfortable and recently I acquired a 110 mm steel, badged Cinelli stem to replace the short stem. As I was swapping them out this morning, I noticed a difference. The width of the bar-clamping area on the 80 mm stem is 28 mm wide and the 110 mm stem is 24 mm.

The 24 mm width is easier to slide over the bars, but does anyone know why there is a difference? Is the 28 mm width older and Cinelli "improved" the stems by making them more narrow? Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.
