Subject: [CR] filing lugs on older lugged frames

I can appreciate the amount of effort that goes into the preparation of lugs and BB shells by KOF frame builders before brazing a frame together. I have over forty hours filing grinding sanding lugs on my 58 Hetchins I got from David Miller of Hetchins in England. Before I sent the frame to Ed Litton for a resray. Ask for photos. It came with a cast Iron BB. I must have removed a few ounces off that BB Shell before I was done. Once when I was going real slow I remembered I had a grinding stone cone shaped for us in my electric drill. It fit perfectly into small radius of BB shell. Than I used emery sandpaper in long strips to pull back and forth over BB and over lugs to get smoother after grinding and filling. It was while worth the effort. I was good for about two hours before my attention waned. How frame builders produce what they do for price they charge for a new lugged frame amazes me. Of course most lugs, BB shells are investment cast and require very little filing. I did the same for the frame Paul Taylor build for me on a full set of Melle investment cast lugs to change to profile somewhat. There was at least 25 hours of filing. Ask for photos. I have nice sunny covered patio and I just headed out there to enjoy the day while filling and grinding.

Worth the effort
