My favorite trick for removing permanent marker is to scribble over it using a "Dry Erase" marker and immediately wiping with a cloth -- the solvent that floats the Dry Erase particles picks up the permanent ink too.
I do this all the time, as I have a habit of mislabeling burned DVDs and this provides for an easy do-over.
