David,
I don't know if your comment is meant ironically (I'd always understood that Americans had no sense of irony - but this assumes that you are American, of course, which isn't clear from your failure to 'sign off' in approved manner?), but you need to be aware that 'the folks at Brooks' (all of whom are my good friends, BTW) know squit about anything that took place in the business more than, say, twenty years ago.
I usually spend several hours each week answering questions on their behalf - more than two hours yesterday, as it happens.

The Brooks folks are really good about responding to question about their saddles. I received this answer from the folks at brooks.
====================================================== This is a production date code that tell us that the cantle was pressed in January 1975
Best Regards
Steve

Dan, Robert and all,
In all the years that I've been involved with Brooks' saddles I've never come across an example with a date-stamping on the underside of the cantle which carried any letter other than A, B, C or D. Accordingly, it seems certain to me that each of these letters referred to a period of three months. For many years, the leather tops were embossed with a much more detailed code which I assume is a more specific 'batch' reference, but it'd probably require the combined resources of Bletchley Park and G.C.H.Q. to decipher these.
+++CAUTION! OFF-TOPIC!+++ Much more recently, Brooks have stamped the leather tops with an unambiguous month/year code; e.g. 0L7 indicates December 2007 and 9B8 means February 1998.

> Assuming that you are referring to that which is stamped into the underside of the cantle plate, it would be a manufacturing date code indicating that the particular saddle in question originates from the first (...i.e. "A") production run of the calendar year 1975 (...i.e "75). Although I am not absolutely certain, my vague recollection is that the letter code preface itself incremented by fortnight (...i.e. a 14 day span of time). If so, then your saddle would have been built up during the first fourteen days of January, 1975.
