When I first started building frames in the mid '70s, water bottle braze ons were not very common. Then later in the '70s it became more common to have one water bottle cage on the down tube. I usually had a second water bottle cage, either on the handlebars or clamped to the seat post, sometimes both. The thing I don't remember is why the frames I built in the early 80s only have one set of water bottle cage braze ons. The only thing I can say is for most of the races I rode in back then, one water bottle was more than enough and I was still a weight weenie. Water bottle cages always came with clamps.
I always had my pump under my top tube anyway, even without a peg a silca of the correct size will stay there. Eric Keller Boalsburg, PA
