Yes, it is possible. Coincidentally, I took a set of FB hubs to a mechanic last week and asked if it was possible to do this. He told me it was and pulled out a set of Airlites that he'd separated from the flanges and was in the middle of polishing before sending off to be chromed.

I'm not sure what the technique for removal/reattachment is, though. All I know is I ain't trying it myself.
