A brazed in piece of pipe would certainly add strength at the crown to steerer tube junction but I can't see how a piece of wood could add any appreciable strength. It's already quite a strong joint. I thought the only use would be to try to keep dirt out. I don't usually ride in the rain but I sometimes get caught in it and I live in a damp area. I took the plug out of the Gios. I would rather have air circulation dry the area. A wood plug may be good in a dry climate.
